I renewed my safety deposit box rent for 1 year in August. I just received a letter form the bank saying to come in and remove the contents of the box if I wanted it before the end of the year as they are closing the local branch office. I asked if I would get a refund on the 8 unused months and they said the only thing they could do was to waive that portion of the rental towards a safe box at another branch of the same bank. Is there a way I can just get my money back?

You could talk to your local District Attorney's office to find out if there is any recourse through your state's Consumer Protection laws.

That is not their offer. They will give you credit toward another safe deposit box at another branch.

Obviously not.
