I heard through online research and news that craiglist is full of scams?

How do you spot a scam post and legit post and how do you safely send a resume to craigslist without giving them too much personal info?

How did you successfully approach craiglist and found a job?

Yes, craigslists is full of fake ads from scammers. While there is no way to determine 100% if a job is legit or fake, there are ways to weed out some of the more obvious scammers and scams.

6 "Rules to follow" to avoid most fake jobs:

1) Job asks you to use your personal bank account and/or open a new one.

2) Job asks you to print/mail/cash a check or money order.

3) Job asks you to use Western Union or moneygram in any capacity.

4) Job asks you to accept packages and re-ship them on to anyone.

5) Job asks you to pay visas, travel fees via Western Union or moneygram.

6) Job asks you to sign up for a credit reporting or identity verification site.

Avoiding all jobs that mention any of the above listed 'red flags' and you will miss nearly all fake jobs. Only scammers ask you to do any of the above. No. Exceptions. Ever. For any reason.

Do you know how to check the header of a received email? If not, you could google for information. Being able to read the header to determine the geographic location an email originated from will help you weed out the most obvious scams and scammers. Then delete and block that scammer. Don't bother to tell him that you know he is a scammer, it isn't worth your effort. He has one job in life, convincing victims to send him their hard-earned cash.

Whenever suspicious or just plain curious, google everything, website addresses, names used, companies mentioned, phone numbers given, all email addresses, even sentences from the emails as you might be unpleasantly surprised at what you find already posted online. You can also post/ask here and every scam-warner-anti-fraud-busting site you can find before taking a chance and losing money to a scammer.

You can't tell the scams from real posts because the scam jobs sound real - or nobody would apply

Stay safe by either just putting just your city and state or rent a PO Box. If you get scammed you do not want them to know your home address. Set up a special email account only for job searches - that way if you do get scammed your normal email won't end up on a spam list, and if you do get sent an infected link it won't spam your normal contacts. And if you want to be even safer, get a pay as you go phone just for job searches - you can get them for as cheap as $15 and just top up with $10

Then watch out for the scams - NOBODY is going to employ you without interviewing you in person, so do not trust anyone who says they want to hire you but are out of town

NEVER give your home address to anyone you have not met for any reason.

NEVER click on any link wanting you to go to a specific site for a credit check, background check, skills assessment test or IQ test before you've ever met the person and verified the company exists. Most of these sites are scams, not only charging you for the "free" test - sometimes up to $69/month for 36 months with no way to cancel. Many also exist solely to steal your personal information for identity theft.
