I bid on something that started out $1.50
So I placed a bid for $5.00 but now the strange thing is my current bid of 5 isn't showing instead it's showing $1.50 and another strange thing is it says I'm the current highest bidder and says my
maximum high bid is 5 but it says $1.50 on the front did my bid not go through should I bid again ?

When you enter a bid on eBay, to other eBay users is only shows either the minimum bid (if any) or a little over any other bids. And your bid will automatically rise above any subsequent bids as long as it does not go over your maximum.

For example if someone else entered a bit for $3, your bid would rise to just over that. That way other bidders cannot tell what you bid unless they exceed your maximum bid. So you avoid over paying if nobody else bids or all other bids are lower than your maximum.

It sometimes works out best to not place your highest bid until close to expiration, or the price may bid higher than you could have gotten if you waited. I think it is called "bid sniping" if you have an accurate clock and wait until the last minute before bidding expires and place your best bid then. That is more useful for something that is not in short supply. For example when I wanted to by a GPS and someone was selling a bunch of new ones over a period of time, I placed my bids at the last minute and missed a bunch of them that priced higher. But once those people bought at a high price, I eventually got one cheaper.

You do not understand how a maximum bid works. When you place a maximum bid, you are saying that is the MOST you will pay. But your current bid will be only what is actually needed to top the previous bid. You place a maximum bid in the hopes that you won't have to pay that much. You are the current high bidder at $1.50. If no other bids are placed, you win at $1.50. If other bids are placed, your bid will automatically top them until your maximum is exceeded, and then you are out.

It's right. If somebody bids more than 1.50, your bid will be automatically raised to beat theirs, up to $5. If nobody else bids, you'll get it for 1.50. That;s how ebay bidding works.

you've put a maximum bid of 5 in. It will carry on beating other bids until it reaches 5, then stop, but it doesn't jump straight to 5, it just goes slightly higher than the last bid.
