I got a call saying I owe for a cash advance I got years ago? I wasnt sure and it scared me so I agreed to pay on it. Now a company called SMB Associates is deducting $100 out of my account every two weeks. When I googled the company I tried to call them to talk about my case and I can never get anyone and no one ever calls me back. Anyone ever heard of them?

What you are describing is a collection agency, which is required to be licensed by the state. The only SMB & Associates I know of is in Chattanooga, TN and is purportedly out of business, but the BBB has an alert on them. I believe it is a scam.

This old bill of yours was probably uncollectable if it was more than 4 years old, because of the Statute of Limitations. However, your re-affirming the debt may reinstate it. First stop immediately paying any more on it. I don't know what account that money is taken out of, but if it is a bank account or a credit card call the bank or issuer and ask to stop any further payments.

Call the company and ask them for PROOF that you owe the money, other than just your admission. You want to see a copy of the original note and promise to pay. You want an accounting of what you already paid on this debt (like years ago) and how the present balance was determined. Then call the Consumer Protection Agency in your state and lodge a complaint for unfair business practices and intimidation with them. You may also send a private email to me with specific details and I may be able to help you more.

I am having a problem contacting these people also. They called me with a collection debt for a payday loan. they said they were gonna have a policeman serve me papers at work to appear in court unless i call and make some arrangemets with the collection company. they also caim to be a Law Firm, and quoted me all the very high costs of appearing in court, and possibly going to jail. Yes they scared me I now cannot contact them. whenever i call someone who speaks no english answers the phone. i am afraid i have been scammed. although i know i do owe the money and want to pay this debt off. but i cannot contact these people. what can i do. i last tried to call them on today 9/19/2014. and got some one speaking another language, but was able to tell me i had the wrong number in english.

Contact your bank and put a fraud alert on your account. See if you can get your money back. Calls like that are always a scam!
